Watery Eyes But Still Dry? The Hidden Cause Most People Miss
Do your eyes constantly water—but still feel dry or irritated?
It sounds contradictory, but it’s one of the most common symptoms people experience. Your eyes may stream in the wind, water when you’re outside, or tear up throughout the day—yet still feel dry, gritty, or uncomfortable.
Many people assume watering eyes mean there’s “too much moisture.” In reality, it’s often the opposite.
At our Dry Eye Clinic in Leamington Spa, this is one of the most misunderstood signs of dry eye disease—and one of the most commonly mistreated.
What’s actually causing watery but dry eyes?
Your eyes are designed to maintain a stable tear film that keeps the surface smooth, clear, and protected. This tear film depends heavily on a healthy oil layer, which prevents tears from evaporating too quickly.
When this oil layer is compromised—most commonly due to blocked oil glands (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction)—the tear film becomes unstable. Tears evaporate too fast, leaving the surface of the eye exposed and irritated.
In response, your eyes try to compensate by producing more watery tears. This is known as reflex tearing.
The problem is, these tears are low quality. They don’t contain the oil needed to properly lubricate the eye, so they don’t solve the issue. Instead, they overflow, causing excessive watering while the underlying dryness remains.
Why it keeps happening (and often gets worse)
This cycle can become persistent.
Environmental triggers like wind, cold air, or air conditioning can make symptoms worse. Screen use also plays a major role—reduced blinking means the tear film isn’t properly spread, and the oil glands become less active over time.
Many people try to manage this with eye drops, but while they may provide temporary relief, they don’t correct the imbalance in the tear film or restore gland function. As a result, the watering and irritation continue.
What actually fixes the problem
To properly treat watery but dry eyes, the focus needs to be on improving tear quality—not just increasing tear volume.
This means restoring the function of the oil glands, stabilising the tear film, and reducing inflammation on the surface of the eye.
At Dry Eye Clinic in Leamington Spa, we use a diagnostic-led approach to identify exactly what’s causing your symptoms. From there, we create a tailored treatment plan designed to correct the underlying issue.
Treatments may include therapies to unblock and reactivate the glands, as well as advanced light-based treatments to reduce inflammation and improve tear stability over time.
When should you get your eyes checked?
If your eyes are watering excessively but still feel dry, irritated, or gritty, it’s a strong sign that your tear film isn’t functioning properly.
Left untreated, this can become more persistent and harder to manage. Early treatment is far more effective and can restore long-term comfort.
